Cheney Rally: Washington PA

I did end up going to the Cheney Rally in Washington PA, hosted by my college alma mater. My thoughts were that I'd like to attend a Bush/Cheney event and I didn't think I'd get a better chance before the election, so I drove the 2 hours to Washington to see the Vice President speak... On my way home from the visit, while listening to the radio I learned that President Bush had been in my home state of Ohio (not a surprise) and that the President's rally was in Youngstown (Doh!). So instead of driving 20 minutes to see the President, I drove 2 hours to see the Vice President; but, the President wasn't speaking at my college Alma Mater... I console myself with that thought.

Anyway, the Bush/Cheney rally was worth the trip. I bought my first ever political pin, purchased my first ever political sign (and put the sign in the front yard), and was able to hear one of America's finest statesmen deliver a speech. To be honest I spent more time taking pictures than I did listening to the VP; but at this point I pretty well know the speeches by heart. Everytime something new is added to a speech it peaks in interest, but most of the lines are recycled.

Click here for a transcript of what the vice president said.

The atmosphere inside the Henrey Memorial Center was bordering on rock concert. Somewhere between 2,000 and 2,500 people showed up to see the VP.

There were people shoulder-to-shoulder in every direction. Everyone had signs, flags, pom-poms, etc and random chants of "4 more years" would errupt from the crowd throughout the rally.

Having arrived shortly before the doors opened, my group was able to get a pretty good spot towards the front

(between 3 and 6 rows back).

I have much better pics of the VP but I am waiting for the film to develope. I couldn't figure out how to get the digital camera to zoom in any closer on the VP. I also can't figure out how to get the video pics I shot to display as a moving pic on a PC.

The most interesting thing Cheney said, which was fairly new to his speeches, was his refutation of the CBS/NYT's story about missing explosives.

Cheney said:
John Kerry will say and do anything to get elected. Most recently, he's been charging that American forces did not do enough to protect a weapons facility in Iraq, with the result that some 380 tons of explosives disappeared. But John Kerry doesn't know if those explosives were even at the weapons facility when our troops arrived. The charge he is making is so wild that his own advisors are saying they don't know if it's true. But John Kerry is not a man to let a shortage of facts bother him. (Laughter and applause.)

He rushed out to put up a TV ad saying there was a failure to secure these explosives, when he has no idea if they were even there to be secured. The title of John Kerry's TV ad is Obligation, which is pretty ironic if you think about it: The first obligation of a Commander-in-Chief is to support our men and women in combat. (Applause.) Which John Kerry failed to do a year ago when he voted against the funding they needed, and which he is failing to do now by making accusations without knowing the facts. Our troops ought to be praised for the 400,000 tons of weapons and explosives they've captured. (Applause.) At the same time, they've been building schools, training Iraqi forces, fighting an insurgency, they've seized 400,000 tons and are in the process of destroying them. These brave men and women deserve better than to have their actions called into question by a political candidate who is so ambitious, he can't wait for the facts. (Applause.)
One thing the official transcript doesn't show is that VP Cheney, a guy who probably doesn't smile often enough, broke into a big grin everytime the crowd would chant 4 more years. That was probably my favorite part of the rally, seeing the Vice President break into a spontaneous and genuine smile when the crowd would break into yelling 4 more years.

One of the more suprising parts of the VP's speech involved an unexected (for the VP, at least) boo from the crowd. Every speaker at the event brought up the fact that Arlen Specter is up for election. Every mention of Specter brought about a boo from the crowd. Apparently no-one told the VP about the anti-Specter crowd, because Cheney brought him up:
The President and I are delighted to be part of a great Republican ticket here in Pennsylvania this year. I want to thank Congressman Tim Murphy for his kind words and the great leadership he provides. (Applause.) And I also want to put in a good word for Senator Arlen Specter, although he couldn't be here today.

AUDIENCE: Booo!

THE VICE PRESIDENT: This is a tough crowd. (Laughter and applause.)

AUDIENCE MEMBER: We love you, Mrs. Cheney. (Applause.)

AUDIENCE MEMBER: (Inaudible.)

THE VICE PRESIDENT: You're playing havoc with my concentration. (Laughter.)
Arlen Specter is the most liberal Republican Senator... over his senate tenure (which spans Senator Kerry's entire career) he voted with Kerry an amazing 60% of the time. Specter doesn't have a conservative base in PA. The conservatives that want Bush in want Specter out. I was wracking my brain trying to determin why the President would back Specter, and then it came to me... if he supports Specter, he doesn't lose his conservative base, he just annoys them a little. If he doesn't support Specter, Specter might then try to get his base to vote for Kerry. In a tight election, where every vote in PA is going to be crucial; the President can't afford to not support Specter.

Oh, I wanted to mention the protestors. As I said before, at least 2,000 supporters showed up to see the VP, and as many as 2500 with a generous estimate. People were packed into the building, some lined up where they couldn't even see the VP, just hear the speech. We contrast the thousands of Cheney supporters with between 30 and 50 anti-Bush/Cheney protestors who showed up chanting "hey hey, ho ho, Bush-Cheney got to go" and "one more week! one more week!" I was pretty suprised to find no Associated Press pictures of the Bush Cheney Crowd at the event, but there were several pics of the protestors. I took a few of my own:

I was told at one point the faculty outnumbered the students, which would not suprise me at all. Some of the older folks in these pics were, at one time, my professors. I have nothing bad to say about these folks... they are a bit misguided, but are, for the most part, really nice people. Behind the shrill voices screaming for "Regime Change" are people with good hearts... It saddened me to see some of them out there. What didn't sadden me was learning that some of the more liberal professors wouldn't allow their students out to see the VP. I know of several students who were told categorically that they could not go to see the VP speak. I also know that the same professors would have cancelled classes if Kerry or Edwards had shown up.

I'll throw up some new pics when I get more developed.

Kerry Waffles on Military Records:

From NBC NEWS' MEET THE PRESS, Sunday, April 18, 2004:
MR. RUSSERT: The Boston Globe reports that your commanding officer, Lieutenant Commander Grant Hibberd has suggested that you perhaps didn't earn your first Purple Heart and question whether you should have left Vietnam after six months. In order to deal with those kinds of issues, when I asked President Bush about his service in the Texas Guard, he agreed to release all his military records, health records, everything. Would you agree to release all your military records?

SEN. KERRY: I have. I've shown them--they're available to you to come and look at. I think that's a very unfair characterization by that person. I mean, politics is politics. The medical records show that I had shrapnel removed from my arm. We were in combat. We were in a very, very--probably one of the most frightening--if you ask anybody who was with me, the two guys who were with me, was probably the most frightening night that they had that they were in Vietnam and we're...

MR. RUSSERT: But you'll make all your records public?

SEN. KERRY: They are. People can come and see them at headquarters and take a look at them. I'm not going to--but I'll tell you this. I'm proud of my service. I'm proud of what we did. I know what happened. And the Navy 35 years ago made a decision and it's the Navy's decision and I think it was the right decision.
From NBC Nightly News:
Brokaw: Someone has analyzed the President's military aptitude tests and yours, and concluded that he has a higher IQ than you do.

Kerry: That's great. More power. I don't know how they've done it, because my record is not public. So I don't know where you're getting that from.

Brokaw: Do you think he's a smart man?

Kerry: I do. Yes, I do think he's a smart man.
Uh oh, looks like Senator Kerry has been caught in ANOTHER lie, again waffling on his military records.

The Question...

The Question

The question you must ask yourself
As you head off to your poll,
Is who you trust to lead us now
That survival is our goal.
We tread the path of Jihad’s wrath,
Where misstep could spell doom,
And future times of horrid climes,
In Holocaust’s gray gloom.

What then again I’ll ask of you,
Should be our true agendas,
Privilege and prosperity
Or ways to best defend us?
Affluence won’t concern us much,
Other problems will confound us,
When our cities lie in smoking ruins,
With destruction all around us.

What sort of man I ask you now
Do we really want to lead us?
A nuanced pol, who talks and talks,
While Jihadis grimly bleed us?
Or a fighter, who will walk the walk,
Take the battle to them there,
Force their hand and make them stand,
Destroy them in their lair?

This veteran says let’s fight them there;
Lure all those fanatic fools,
To where they face armed fighting men,
Not children in their schools.
I know how I shall vote this time,
I’ll vote to win this war;
Not to let John Kerry lose it,
As he did mine long before.

Bush Daughters Give Behind the Scenes Look

For the last four months, we have had the honor to travel around the country, spreading our Dad's message and the experience has been so rewarding. We have met so many great people - from students to busy moms to military families. We have really had so much fun being on the campaign trail.

As you'll see in this video, our dad has a lot of fun too. He's really down-to-earth and he has a great sense of humor. And that definitely comes in handy when you're running for President. We hope you'll enjoy this behind-the-scenes look at the campaign. And we encourage you to pass this on to five other people who'd like to see our dad in some unscripted moments.

This election is going to be really close, which means that a lot will depend on how many people actually get out and vote. Thank you so much for your interest in the campaign. Please make sure you vote on November 2nd, and please vote to re-elect our dad, George W. Bush.

Cheney Rally

I think I may be going to a Bush/Cheney rally tomorrow. (Yay!). Cheney will be speaking at my college alma mater. I am psyched. I'll see if I can get some pictures; I don't know how tight security will be and if I will be allowed to bring a camera.

The Right Equipment for the Job

I recieved the following partial NPR transcript from a regular contruibutor to E*D.
Regardless of how you feel about gun laws you have to love this, one of the best comeback lines of all time.
LIBERAL FEMALE INTERVIEWER: So, General Reinwald, what things are you going to teach these young boys when they visit your base?

GENERAL REINWALD: We're going to teach them climbing, canoeing, archery, and shooting.

LFI: Shooting! That's a bit irresponsible, isn't it?

GEN: I don't see why, they'll be properly supervised on the rifle range.

LFI: Don't you admit that this is a terribly dangerous activity to be teaching children?

GEN: I don't see how. We will be teaching them proper rifle discipline before they even touch a firearm.

LFI: But you're equipping them to become violent killers.

GEN: Well, you're equipped to be a prostitute, but you're not one, are you?

The radio went silent and the interview ended.
You've GOTTA LOVE the Marines!
Amen.

It's Official...

We now know what all the fuss was about... Security Council members deny meeting Kerry.

U.N. ambassadors from several nations are disputing assertions by Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry that he met for hours with all members of the U.N. Security Council just a week before voting in October 2002 to authorize the use of force in Iraq. An investigation by The Washington Times reveals that while the candidate did talk for an unspecified period to at least a few members of the panel, no such meeting, as described by Mr. Kerry on a number of occasions over the past year, ever occurred.
So, was it worth all the hype? A visitor to E*D wrote:
Here it is... at first I was all "ho-hum" but when I read more of it, I realized that it's better than I thought. I hope conservatives POUNCE on Kerry for this.
I think that is a more than fair assessment. Essentially this article is just debate-debunking. Kerry made a false claim in the debate. It just so happens that he has continually made this false claim; and so John Kerry has been caught in another pathological lie.

John Kerry was caught in a similar lie about Cambodia. Both lies he told repeatedly in order to justify his political stance; both lies Kerry told in his official capacity as a Senator (On the floor of the Senate talking about the memory of spending Christmas in Cambodia, a memory he claimed was seared into his brain, and this new lie speaking before the Council on Foreign Relations in New York in December 2003 and in the second presidential debate). The one main difference: Kerry's lie about meeting with the UN security council is a lie that is directly pertinent to this election. John Kerry lied to the American people during this election concerning a matter of Foreign policy at a time in which American Foreign policy is the major concern in the election - at a time when credibility on matters relating to foreign policy is essential.

So just what did Senator Kerry say? According to the Joel Mowbray article,
Speaking before the Council on Foreign Relations in New York in December 2003, Mr. Kerry explained that he understood the "real readiness" of the United Nations to "take this seriously" because he met "with the entire Security Council, and we spent a couple of hours talking about what they saw as the path to a united front in order to be able to deal with Saddam Hussein."
In the Second Presidential debate, Senator Kerry said
KERRY: Nikki, that's a question that's been raised by a lot of people around the country.

Let me address it but also talk about the weapons the president just talked about, because every part of the president's answer just now promises you more of the same over the next four years.

The president stood right here in this hall four years ago, and he was asked a question by somebody just like you, "Under what circumstances would you send people to war?"

And his answer was, "With a viable exit strategy and only with enough forces to get the job done."

He didn't do that. He broke that promise. We didn't have enough forces.

General Shinseki, the Army chief of staff, told him he was going to need several hundred thousand. And guess what? They retired General Shinseki for telling him that.

This president hasn't listened.

I went to meet with the members of the Security Council in the week before we voted. I went to New York. I talked to all of them to find out how serious they were about really holding Saddam Hussein accountable.

I came away convinced that, if we worked at it, if we were ready to work and letting Hans Blix do his job and thoroughly go through the inspections, that if push came to shove, they'd be there with us.

But the president just arbitrarily brought the hammer down and said, "Nope. Sorry, time for diplomacy is over. We're going."

He rushed to war without a plan to win the peace.

Ladies and gentleman, he gave you a speech and told you he'd plan carefully, take every precaution, take our allies with us. He didn't. He broke his word.
The article goes on to explain that the Washington Times were able to reach five ambassadors on the Security Council in 2002. Four said they had never met Kerry nor had anyone who worked for their countries. The Washington Times DID confirm that Kerry had met with representatives of France, Singapore and Cameroon. The times claims an official with the Kerry campaign reaffirmed Kerry's claims to have met with the entire Security Council as of a week ago; however Kerry camp has since issued a new statement upon learning of the Washington Times investigation which claims that Kerry's alleged meeting with all members of the UN Security Council was a "closed meeting and a private discussion" - it is still unclear which, if any, Security Council member nations were present.

A particularly damning passage from the Wash Times piece comes rather late in the piece and reads
"We were as surprised as anyone when Kerry started talking about a meeting with the Security Council." Jean-David Levitte, then France's chief U.N. representative and now his country's ambassador to the United States, said through a spokeswoman that Mr. Kerry did not have a single group meeting as the senator has described, but rather several one-on-one or small-group encounters. He added that Mr. Kerry did not meet with every member of the Security Council, only "some" of them.
In my opinion, it is at this point in the article when things become interesting.. too bad it is towards the middle/bottom.

So what does it all mean? Is this worthy of being called an October surprise? Is this going to damage Kerry with little more than a week to go before election day? My gut tells me no. Right now, as of tomorrow, hundreds of bloggers will have addressed this story. We can expect that tomorrow morning, this will be on the radio air waves. Maybe, MAYBE Fox News will pick it up. Basically this will be the Swift Vets all over again... New Media vs Old Media. The new Media will pound this story into the ground. The old media will either dismiss or ignore the story for as long as is possible. I am looking forward to seeing how long CBS and ABC can ignore this... somehow I just don't see Dan Rather talking about this story. With so little time left in the election, and most Americans having made up their mind already, I don't see this story getting enough attention quickly enough to have any meaningful impact.

Even assuming that this story is picked up and treated fairly by the American media, is this story damning enough to change voters minds? I don't know. I am leaning towards no. Any American who is paying attention firmly believes that "the other side" is nothing more than a pack of liars. The left will either refuse to believe the story or go on the attack and claim that Bush lied about "Fill-in-the-blank-with-leftist-lunacy." The right will be saying, "what else is new? Kerry (ghasp) LIED about something!?! (sarcastic)"

The biggest factor for this story, as far as I am concerned, is the spin. If the right is able to make this story the focus of attention (and that is a major hurdle, IMO) in the media in the coming days, then the spin will need to be layed on pretty thick. This has to be about a presidential candidate abusing the American people's trust. This has to be about repeated, pathological lying on the part of a candidate who will do and say anything to get elected. But this cannot just be about a lie; if it is, the left will say Bush lied about X, Y, and Z. The spin has to be that Kerry knowingly and purposefully lied during the election process about issues important to the election. The focus needs to be on the fact that Kerry claimed his meeting with the entire UN Security Council influenced his vote for War in Iraq.

I am looking forward to the takes on this story. The spin doctors have their work cut out for them; even with a slam-dunk case that Kerry has lied and is lying about important campaign issues, I reiterate, 'so what else is new?'

I guess my lack of enthusiasm for this story revolves around the fact that I was hoping for an October surprise. This may surprise some but, personally, I am not all that surprised that Kerry has been caught in another lie. I think the left will get more attention out of their new focus on stolen explosives in Iraq (which apparently we've known about for months, but are just now hearing about in the NYTs). But I will do my part; I AM doing my part by writing this post.

I am interested in YOUR feedback on this... what did you think about the story? Leave a comment.

IR does a good job getting some of Kerry's statements about metting with the Security Council into better context:
John Kerry Dec. 3 2003: Thanks to some friends in New York, I was invited to come up and meet with the Security Council in the week prior to the vote, and I wanted to do that, because I valued my vote. And I wanted to know what the real readiness and willingness of our partners was to take this seriously.

So I sat with the French and British, Germans, with the entire Security Council, and we spent a couple of hours talking about what they saw as the path to a united front in order to be able to deal with Saddam Hussein.

Now at the time, they were pushing for a second vote. But there was a way through that path, in my judgment, with patience and maturity and a readiness and a willingness to be serious. I don't think it took a lot of skill or analysis to understand that the politics of their populations at that time were not ready to move. And any president ought to understand the politics of other people's electorates, as you try to define how you get from here to there, which is the art of diplomacy.

Now I think patience could have said to the French or the Germans, "Okay, what do you need? What proof do you want? How long do we have to inspect? All right. Let's do that openly for the next month. We'll come back to the Security Council, and at that point, would you be ready?"
And
John Kerry @ Unity Conference: And I believe we need a commander in chief who understands the test before you send young people to war. You got to be able to look parents in the eyes if they lose their son or daughter and say to them, "I tried to do everything in my power to avoid this, but we had no choice as a nation, as a people, because of the challenge to our country, to our fundamental values from a threat that was real and imminent."

I believe in my heart of hearts and in my gut that this president fails that test in Iraq. And I know this because I, personally, and others were deeply involved in the effort with other countries to bring them to the table. I met with the Security Council of the United Nations in the week preceding the vote in the Senate.

I voted to hold Saddam Hussein accountable, because, had I been president, I would have wanted that authority, because that was the way to enforce the U.N. resolutions and be tough with the prospect of his development of weapons of mass destruction. But the president said he would go to war as a last resort. The president said he would exhaust the remedies of the U.N. The president said he would build a legitimate international coalition.
Thank to IR for providing more depth to what Kerry said.

I was checking out the comments over on blogs for bush about this story. I think B4B's readers comments are pretty telling... not too many people are particularly worked up; then again not everyone stays up all night blogging and those who do are looking for something really big. I'm yawning now because I am tired, but is that the only reason?

A look at the Kerry News

Here are some articles that caught my eye recently:

John Kerry’s faith guides him, except when it doesn’t - The Union Leader

An October surprise that ought to worry John Kerry - Houston Chronicle

And here is something I didn't know about Kerry:

During his hate-america protest days, he was arrested.

How To Keep An Idiot In Suspense For 36 Hours

Powerline, Blogs For Bush, LGF, Red State, et al have received a tip that on Monday morning the Washington Times will break a story which could potentially be devastating the Kerry campaign. As you all know, I'm sure, the sites receiving the tip are what you might call "heavyweights" in the blogging community... I am still waiting for the tip to come to my inbox. Waiting and waiting... heh.

In the mean time, rumors and allegations are flying as bloggers try to figure out just what this big story could be. Will this be the much anticipated October Surprise? Some have indicated that the Wash Times story will uncover a Kerry lie... that really narrows it down. The Swiftvets uncovered about 1000 Kerry lies.

A safe bet would be that the Wash Times has uncovered something which occurred between Kerry's time at Yale and his time in the Senate. Kerry told a lot of lies to get elected and stay elected. But... Kerry also has a 20 year Senate record. Perhaps an intern somewhere in there? If this is solely based on a lie told by Kerry; maybe it has something to do with ties to 527's. The blogosphere is perplexed. And we will continue to be perplexed... cause we are all just sitting here in suspense until Monday morning... or until Drudge or someone else gets the scoop.

Update: lgf is reporting that this story 'has something to do with Kerry’s foreign policy and his honesty...' Rathergate has indicated that it has to do with something recent. I wonder if it is related to this: Kerry: Bush Allowed Bin Laden to Escape... but Tommy Franks already refuted that... hrm... Could it be something to do with Iran? Hmmm... probably not, the Wash Times is supposed to be breaking the story. What could it be? What could it be?

Gaytopia? Cher's Crystal Ball

Cher predicts gay state if Bush elected:
All the gay guys, all my friends, all my gay friends, you guys you have got to vote, alright? Because it would only be a matter of time before you guys would be so screwed, I cannot tell you. Because, you know, the people, like, in the very right wing of this party, of these Republicans, the very very right wing, the Jerry Falwell element, if they get any more power, you guys are going to be living in some state by yourselves. So, I hate scare tactics, but I really believe that that's true.
We know its a scare tactic, but is this going to make gays want to vote against Bush? Cher is talking about the "Falwell" type giving gays their very own state... a gaytopia if you will.

End to Gay Parades? Cher predicts
if Bush gets elected, he will put in new Superior Court judges, and these guys are not going to want to see gay pride week

Clinton Head of UN?

Drudge has a link to a story stating:
Former U.S. President Bill Clinton has set his sights on becoming U.N. secretary-general. A Clinton insider and a senior U.N. source have told United Press International the 56-year-old former president would like to be named leader of the world body when Kofi Annan's term ends early in 2006.

"He definitely wants to do it," the Clinton insider said this week.
And May God Have mercy on us all.

Staring At The Monitor: 4:40 AM

It's late but I'm still blogging.
Came across: John Kerry Staring At The Ceiling at 2AM and I just had to share it. It's good... Real good. The Intro:
I can’t sleep . . . I’m so close. I’m going to be President if I play this right.

The Electoral Vote Predictor on AOL, as of today, has me ahead 284 to 247.

If they’re right and the election is held tomorrow, I will be President of the United States. Thirty years after I testified in front of Congress against our soldiers while the enemy was holding many of them prisoners in Vietnam, I’m about to be to be elected to run the nation.

I say never underestimate the American People’s capacity to forgive and forget -- most of all forget.
You have got to read the full article. It nails Kerry on his Vietnam testimony, points out that he promises everything to everyone:
I mean it’s not that I don’t stand for something.

Hell I stand for everything. But America’s eating it up. I’ve got them eating out of my hand. If they’re young, I promise them free education. If they’re old, I promise them free medication. If they’re feeling put upon, I promise them instant vindication. Bottom line is if it ends in “tion” I promise it to someone.
It nails Kerry on running from his liberal record:
Up until November 2, I am John Kerry The Conservative Religious Defender of The National Rifle Association. After that, I can be like my hero Jimmy Carter with a deeper voice and a better accent.
nails Kerry for the flip-flopping:
Wish I hadn’t said I would treat terrorism as a nuisance like prostitution. But it’s a two day world. All I have to do is take a position I think they want to hear and then, if it backfires, take the opposite position. The flip-flop charge is an old issue -- I was able to change positions during the debate and thanks to my full head of hair and deep Presidential voice, no one watching was paying attention.
For the Mary Cheney Comment, For his record on raising taxes and his pledge not to raise them. Everything is on the table; flu shots, trial law, prescription drugs... excellent article. And with that, I'm off to bed.

She's A Lady

Well she's all you'd ever want,
She's the kind they'd like to flaunt and take to dinner.
Well she always knows her place.
She's got style, she's got grace, She's a winner.
She's a Lady. Whoa whoa whoa, She's a Lady.
The first lady, showing class and grace, dismissed the need for an apology over Heinz Kerry's comments. CNN reports:
Laura Bush on Thursday brushed off comments about her work experience that were made by Teresa Heinz Kerry...

Asked about Heinz Kerry's apology Wednesday for what she said, Bush responded, "It didn't matter to me. It didn't hurt my feelings. It was perfectly all right that she apologized. She didn't have to apologize. I know how tough it is. And actually I know those trick questions."
Laura Bush could have used Heinz-Kerry's blunder for the purpose of political grandstanding. The First Lady could have given a carefully scripted answer about the importance of appreciating America's teachers and librarians in order to help her husband in this closely contested election; but, once again, the First Lady showed America what a classy woman she is by opting to rise above the partisan fray, by dismissing the need for Heinz Kerry to apologize for her err, and by empathizing with Heinz Kerry with regards to how tricky reporters questions can be.

I say if the first lady doesn't want to make an issue of this, we ought to respect her wishes and let Heinz-Kerry slide.

Waffles Loom Over Kerry Campaign

I don't really have anything in particular to blog about, I just wanted to throw this pic up because it sort of looks like a giant waffle is hanging over Kerry's head. I think "Waffles Loom Over Kerry Campaign" is a good caption for the pic.

E*D helped do it's part to ensure that Kerry's name would forever be linked to the word waffles, and Kerry's inconsistancies have been a major issue throughout the campaign, so in that regard I suppose E*D has been a success. I'm not sure what will happen with this site after the campaign; I plan to continue it until my interests in current events begins to waiver.

Maybe I should spend more time sleeping and less time blogging... I fear that my posts are beginning to make no sense; particularly because of the difficulty I have composing a coherent thought.

How Did You Find Me?

I get a kick out of keeping track of how people come across E*D. Sitemeter keeps track of all unblocked incoming link referrals, so I get to see who is linking to E*D and how people are finding E*D on search engines.

It's always neat to see where your page ranks on the search engines and even more interesting when your site ranks #1. Here are some searches (from Thursday) that lead to E*D... one is the result of a google bomb from some people who apparently don't like my politics.

I know this is of little interest to E*D visitors, but I got a kick out of it so I thought I'd share it anyway.

October Disguise

Fox News is reporting that VP Dick Cheney has "poked fun" at John Kerry for his goose hunting expidition. Fox News reports
Cheney said Kerry's camouflage jacket was "an October disguise — an effort he's making to hide the fact that he votes against gun owner rights at every turn."

"My fellow sportsmen, this cover-up isn't going to work," Cheney said, speaking to supporters in an upscale Toledo suburb that borders the Ohio-Michigan state line. "The Second Amendment is more than just a photo opportunity."
Dick Cheney is a riot. The Tonight Show doesn't have writers this good!

Inherit the Wind

Powerline has an interesting post up 'The room you trash may be your own'. Call me old fashioned, but I like this one better:
He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind
Deacon, of Powerline wrote:
John Derbyshire at the NRO corner posts a letter from a reader in China who is concerned about the impact of the over-the-top Bush-bashing by the U.S. media and the Democrats on perceptions of our country abroad:
One of the things I find particularly distressing is how the careless and hateful rhetoric of Democrats and the media have been swallowed hook, line, and sinker by the Chinese, who receive it via (God help us!) the BBC. Bush evil. Bush stupid. That's what my students believe; the dismissive tone of their voices, when they mention President Bush's name, speaks more than any words can. Democrats and the media are so insular, that they do not begin to conceive of the impact of their propaganda and how that shapes the way the rest of the world views us. What has poisoned the perception of the U.S. abroad is not the actions of GWB, but that of the Democrats and the media who noised abroad their disdain and lack of support for Dubya, all for political gain. Had the Democrats and media done what was right, the U.S. would be in different odor around the globe.
House of Payne, on this same topic, added "Sooner or later, some Democratic president is going to have to drink from this poisoned well."

I really do think the old proverb, He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind, is a far better warning for Democrats and "Bush Haters" who want to politically damage the country. In fact, the President has chastised Kerry for his damaging remarks on several occasions; the focus being on the repercussions of Kerry's Anti-War political rhetoric
And what is he going to say to those people that show up to the summit? Join me in the wrong war at the wrong time at the wrong place? Risk your troops in a war you've called a mistake? Nobody is going to follow somebody who doesn't believe we can succeed, and somebody who says the war where we are is a mistake. I know how these people think. I meet with them all the time. I talk to Tony Blair all the time. I talk to Silvio Berlusconi -- they're not going to follow an American President who says, follow me into a mistake.
(Second Bush-Kerry Presidential Debate)
The left, on the whole, in the course of this election has spouted bitter, irrational, hate-filled lies and rhetoric aimed at getting President Bush out of office. In doing so they have fueled the anti-US sentiment in a way that is dangerous for all Americans and damaging for all future American diplomacy. If only the left in America were a little more God-fearing; they might pick up a Bible and learn that if they keep up this rhetoric, even if they win, they will only end up inheriting the wind.

1 State, 2 State, Red State, Blue State

Kerry may have bagged a goose today, but he still doesn't have all his ducks in a row. A recent article in the Miami Herald, Poll: Kerry hasn't secured 'blue' swing states points out:
Sen. John Kerry has not yet locked up his base of swing states that voted Democratic four years ago

...

He likely has to win all of the "blue" states ? color coded on election maps for states that voted Democratic in 2000 ? AND pick up at least some electoral votes from "red" states carried by Bush four years ago. That's because the blue states weren't enough for an Electoral College victory in 2000, and they have lost another seven electoral votes since then through post-2000 redistricting to reflect population shifts to the South and Southwest.

If Kerry doesn't hold all of the blue states, he has to win away even more red states.
The article points out that of six key blue swingstates, Kerry leads in 3 (by less than the margin of error), is tied in one, and is trailing in two.

If the polling data were a perfect representation of voter turnout in those states, Kerry would be losing the election because he needs not only all of the blue 'Gore' states, but he also has to take a at least one big red "Bush" state or several smaller red states to secure enough electoral votes to win the election. If Kerry loses any of the blue 'Gore' states, he has to take even more red "Bush" states than he would need had he been able to take all the blue states from the 2000 election.

This is not to say that Kerry cannot or will not capture all the blue states and then some, this merely points out that he has yet to secure the important contested states that voted for Gore in the 2000; states Kerry will need if he has any hopes of taking out the incumbent President.

Rouge Alert!
From an interview with John Kerry in Rolling Stone magazine:
Q: What do you think of the color-coded terror alerts the Department of Homeland Security issues?

Kerry: I think Americans, sadly, laugh at it. They don't know what to do.

Q: Will you continue that program?

Kerry: No. I'm going to find some more thoughtful way of alerting America.
Reader Jonathan Wilson offers a preview of Kerry's French-looking alert system:
Level 1: Ennui
Level 2: Comme ci, comme ça
Level 3: Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose
Level 4: Regardez!
Level 5: Zut alors!
Heh. That was too good to pass up.

WashTimes OpEd: Kerry's Multilateralist Fetish

Article.

Everybody lately has been talking about this quote:
"If you mean dying in the course of the United Nations effort, yes, it is worth that. If you mean dying American troops unilaterally going in with some false assumption that we can effect the outcome, the answer is unequivocally no," John Kerry 1994.
The above article is no exception.

The article begins
When it comes to the question of when it is appropriate for the United States to use force abroad, John Kerry seems to have developed one general principle: It is only acceptable to risk American life and limb if the United Nations or supposed allies like France approve.
I can't say that I can disagree with that. Kerry has a long history of making similar statements. A vote for Kerry is a disaster for American foreign policy. If Kerry is elected, America will no longer set our own foreign policy, we would be stuck bowing to the French et al.
